At last -----The MDS Torn Edge Tutorial!

I am so nice. Really. Today I took the time to create this video to show you how I did this:

And so the adventure began. For one thing, I needed software that would capture video as I worked on my computer. I found some free software called CamStudio that I downloaded and started to play with. My main problem was that the sound was choppy, so I ended up creating a separate recording using the Windows Sound Recorder as I was working in MDS. I then simply substituted the recording for the audio that recorded with the video and synced them up in Windows Movie Maker.

Easy peasy...well, no, this has taken me most of the day, so I wouldn't call it "easy peasy" at all! The things I do...just for you! Add to that that people kept coming downstairs just as I started over again, so that I would have to start over again, only to have yet another person come downstairs....sigh. The nice thing about it was that since it was in MDS, I didn't have to worry about making another set of materials to use and didn't waste any supplies at all!

Anyway, I think it came out pretty good and my voice actually sounds less demented than usual, so I'm fairly pleased with it. Here it is...take notes, there will be a test later:

Builder Wheels make my socks go up and down

I don't know why, but whenever I think of the term "Builder Wheels" I think of that move Little Man Tate, where Fred reads "his" poem about clipper ships:

"I like clipper ships because they are fast".

Well, *I* like builder wheels because they are fast too! A fast way to get a cool look that before would have been impossiburgible, baby! (And if that doesn't date me, I don't know what does!) Lookie:

Ingredients: Stamps - Birthday Block, Candle Crazy, Birthday & So Many Stars builder wheels; Paper - Melon Mambo, Pumpkin Pie, Old Olive, Whisper White; Ink - Basic Black, Melon Mambo, Pumpkin Pie, Old Olive; Other - 5/8" Old Olive Grosgrain ribbon, Photo Corner punch, Vintage brads, Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker, dimensionals.

I know, GOJUS!!! (YILM!) And because I am so nice, I put together a little photo tutorial to show you how these work:

BUILDER WHEEL TUTORIAL

Here are all the builder wheels and the assorted parts and pieces you need to use them. You need wheels, the jumbo wheel handle, an ink cartridge (the triple cell one in the catalog is the most fun!), and the Wheel Spindle and Spacers.

This is the Wheel Spindle and Spacers.

Ink up the cells in the blank triple cell cartridge using reinkers.

I inked mine up with Melon Mambo, Old Olive, and Pumpkin Pie, but the possibilities are many. I plan on ordering more of these so I can create different combinations.

You start out by putting the ink cartridge with the cover ON and the little handle facing out into the wheel handle until it clicks. If it doesn't click, it isn't in properly.

Then you can start building with your wheels. One...

Two...

Three!

Or, you can put a spacer on the spindle

Put on just one wheel and the second spacer to use only one wheel at a time.

Or you can put on one wheel, then a spacer, then another wheel and stamp a greeting between the two after you are done wheeling.

Or you can put on two wheels, then a spacer, to use two wheels together.

The last thing you do is put the cap on the other side, with the large side IN next to the last wheel or spacer.

Pop the whole shebang into your wheel handle.

Pull the cover off of your ink cartridge.

Push the cartridge handle up towards the wheel. It should press smoothly up against the wheel.

 

Then start rolling the wheel to ink it up. Sometimes there is a slight difference in circumference between the different wheels. So you will have to press very firmly to help the smaller wheels make contact with the ink and the paper.

To roll straight, I find rolling forward to be easier for me and the wheel guide that we sell helps a lot too!

When you are done, pull the handle back on the ink cartridge until it clicks, put the cover on, then roll the wheels on your grid paper to remove the excess ink. Then you can take them out and clean them.

Keep the ink cartridge in the little ziplock bag it comes in to keep it from drying out as fast.

And that's my tutorial on builder wheels. I like builder wheels because they are fast. Builder wheels stamp on cardstock. Builder wheels stamp on envelopes. Builder wheels never stamp on people or animals. Builder wheels are made out of RUBBAH and there are lots of combinations!

The Teeny Tiny Scrapbook

When I was a child, my parents fell prey to a Collier's Encyclopedia salesman, who managed to convince them that not only did they need a complete Collier's Encyclopedia, Collier's Year Books, and a big Collier's Medical Dictionary, we also needed a set of Collier's Junior Classics. I'm so glad they did, because for me they were the introduction to a world of magic and adventure as well as wonderful book illustration that still influences me today.

One of my very favorite stories in the Collier's Junior Classics was the story of the Teeny Tiny Woman. It told about a teeny tiny woman who lived in a teeny tiny house in a teeny tiny wood....yada yada yada. You get the picture. By the end of the story you were so tired of saying "teeny tiny" that the rather surprising ending came as quite a relief!

So in honor of the Teeny Tiny Woman, I present this, the Teeny Tiny Scrapbook:

Movers & Shapers Votive Cover Video Tutorial

I must be getting better at this, 'cause I was able to crank this out fairly quickly, once I got down to it!

• 1 - 4 1/4" x 11" piece of cardstock
• 4 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces of vellum cardstock.

The Wonderful Woodgrain Video Tutorial

Wow! Wasn't that a great blog tour yesterday! And, as promised, I am here to toot.

NOT that kind of toot! (We had enough of that the other day, anyway, didn't we?)

And not that kind of toot!

I'm talking about my TUTORIAL...which us papercrafting types call "toots" because we are too lazy to say tutorial all the time!

Well, enough tooting my own horn! (had to slip one more in there for ya!)

Here it is!

As you can see, it is supremely simple, yet incredibly GOJUS. I am SO STINKIN' CLEVER!!! (YILM!)  For those who can't see video, here are the basics:

1. Stamp woodgrain background on Very Vanilla cardstock using Soft Suede.
2. Stamp woodgrain background again using Sahara Sand, making sure that the cardstock is oriented in the same position as the first time, but NOT trying to line up the image with the previous stamping...it should be close, but not in the same place.
3. Rub inks of choice on the cardstock using a sponge. 
4. Stamp woodgrain background yet AGAIN using Very Vanilla craft ink, again making sure the cardstock is oriented in the same position, but NOT trying to stamp right on top of previous images.

Different combinations:

• Golden Oak - More Mustard and Soft Suede.
• Cherry or Mahogony - Bravo Burgundy, Soft Sued, Dusty Durango
• Walnut or Pine - Soft Suede, Creamy Caramel, Sahara Sand

Ready to see some GOJUS creations? Here's a twist on the Woodgrain background; I've used my famous technique, Joseph's Coat Iniside-Out with this one.

Ingredients: Stamps - Medallion, Sincere Salutations, Woodgrain; Paper - Soft Suede, Dusty Durango, Real Red, More Mustard, Very Vanilla; Ink - Versamark, Soft Suede, Sahara Sand, Dusty Durango, More Mustard, Real Red, Rich Razzleberry, Very Vanilla Craft; Other - Large Oval Punch, Antique Brass Jumbo Eyelets, Rich Razzleberry dotted grosgrain, clear EP, dimensionals, sponge wedges

And with this one, I created a totally new look, which I'm calling "Inlaid Veneer":

Ingredients: Stamps - Inspired by Nature, Oval All, Woodgrain; Paper - Very Vanilla, More Mustard, Soft Suede; Ink - Soft Suede, Sahara Sand, Very Vanilla Craft; Other - Large Oval Punch, Vanilla tafetta ribbon, gold brads, dimensionals, sponge wedges

With this technique, you use a piece of lighter stained Wonderful Woodgrain background and you dust down your cardstock with an Embossing Buddy to get rid of residual dampness. Then stamp with Versarmark, emboss with clear EP, then the fun begins. I rubbed more Soft Suede over the piece using a sponge wedge, depepening the color until I ended up with what looks like inlaid veneer on very fine furniture. It's BRILLIANTLY GOJUS, isn't it? (YILM!)

The Sensational Cylinder Card Video Tutorial

Well, I'm telling you, this was so much fun to make, LOL! At least, when I finally got it all recorded! Still some things to tweak as far as videos go, but I think you'll find this is an improvement over the last time.

I made one of these cards before and posted it here. I always meant to get around to making a tutorial or at least posting a template and it just never happened. Mea culpa.

But now I'm going to fix that and this video will make those of you wanting to find out how to make a cylinder card very, very happy! So, without further ado:

The Marvelous Magical Marquee Card Video Tutorial!

My first video!

The first thing you need to know is that it is far from perfect. And it's like the fourth or fifth whack at it I took. I kept screwing up, then when I finally had something I thought was worthy, it ended up being 18 minutes long! Too long for YouTube, apparently. So I had to pull the plug on that one, then start all over again.

I figured out the software that came with my camera, ArcSoft TotalMediaExtreme can do almost  everything that Windows Movie Maker can, but one thing it doesn't do well is text. I set up text, saved my project and when I pulled it up again, the text had mysteriously traveled over to the right. And you couldn't drag it back! And there was no way to copy it and paste it. Phooey. And Windows MovieMaker does not like the format of the video that my camera takes, so I am forced to use the ArcSoft software.

I like the camera, it is not perfect, but it only seems to have the same kinds of flaws that other cameras of its kind do, so I'm happy with it.

So once I figured out that I would have to do text in Photoshop and put it in as a photo rather than using the text editor, everything went along swimmingly. And actually, it looks much better and I could put photos with the text in my screen, which I can't do with this ArcSoft software. But by the time I finally got done filming yet AGAIN, I decided that a few mistakes on my part would just add to the charm of the whole thing and forebore to start over once again. Then it was on to figuring out that the format I saved it in was ALL WRONG, so I had to reprocess the thing, reupload it, and let YouTube start processing it. Who knew all this stuff took FREAKIN' FOREVER!!!

So it is what it is and I hope you like it. I'm sure as I go along, they will get more professional. Though one thing will never change and that is my voice, which I have always hated. I sound so stinkin' DOOFY! Oh well.

And the amazing thing? You want to know what the amazing thing is?!?!? I sat on these projects for MONTHS! I made them at the end of June and I was able to not show them to you for almost two months!

I don't know how I managed it, especially considering these are SUCH cool cards, but I knew that a standard photo tutorial would just not show the complete and absolute amazing quality of these cards (YILM!), so I held out for video. And I also knew that if I showed them to you WITHOUT having a video ready, that you would all be after me all the time to post a tutorial, so I held myself back. And it nearly KILLED ME.

But I'm feeling much better now. Now that this thing is finally DONE. Now that all I need to do...

START THINKING ABOUT WHAT TO DO ON MY NEXT VIDEO! What have I done? What have I gotten into? Ack!!!

A Tisket, a Tasket...

A Certainly Celery and So Saffron..and Bashful Blue...and Sahara Sand...basket...

Yeah, doesn't work well as a lyric, but hey...it works great this way!

Ingredients: (all SU!) Stamps - A Good Egg; Paper - Delicate Dots DSP, Whisper White, Barely Banana, Certainly Celery, Sahara Sand; Ink - Basic Black, So Saffron, Bashful Blue; Other - Wide Oval Punch, Scalloped Edge punch, Word Window Punch, Antique Brass Jumbo Eyelets, So Saffron Polytwill ribbon, sponge daubers, So Saffron marker, paper crimper, Scalloped Envelope BIGZ die

Yes, I know! It's STINKIN' CUTE!!! (YILM!) If you are in the area, this is one of the projects for my March 30th class!

This basket is made from four of the scalloped envelopes made with the exclusive SU! Bigz die. This project has been kicking around the internet for a while, but when I saw MJ Albright's version here I was totally gobsmacked! I used it for my inspiration, but simplified it very much to make it a bit easier for my students. And then, of course, I made it totally my own!

To make it, I  stuck the four envelopes together, cutting the side flaps off of two and using the side flaps of the other two to adhere them all together.

I put a square piece of cardstock inside. This helps keep the basket from skewing when you adhere the bottom flaps and gives the bottom flaps something to stick to.

Here's the bottom.

Then I took two pieces of striped paper, 1 3/4" x 7 3/4" and wrapped them around the basket and overlapped them on the sides. The top envelope flaps were folded to the outside. Then I put two jumbo eyelets on each side to put the ribbon through for the handles.

But, of course, the really nifty thing I did was here:

I was trying to figure out how to mat this image punched out with the Wide Oval punch. We don't have a large Scallop Oval punch (wish we did!) and all my attempts to piece together something using the Scallop Circle punch looked really lame. And then the brain wave hit me, like a massive dose of...dose of...CHOCOLATE!!! And genius flowed, my friends, like a river of...CHOCOLATE!!! Yes, yes. I really do love myself, don't I?

"Jan!!!" you say, "How did you do that!?!?!" Well, my friends, it's not for nothing that you read this blog, when you KNOW I am SO NICE! I've made a tutorial for this, just for you!

The Ruffled Scalloped Edge Tutorial

Here's what you need:

• Strip of patterned paper 1" x 12"
• Cardstock
• Wide Oval Punch or other punch shape you'd like to try
• Scallop Edge Punch
• Paper crimper
• adhesive
• Chocolate (but of course!)

Start out out by punching out a couple of the shapes you want to use from the cardstock.

Then, use the Scallop Edge punch to punch one side of the patterned paper.

Turn the paper over and do the other side. This way, you get two strips at the same time and can save the other one for another purpose. I do it this way because working with 1/2" strips of paper is a pain in the ark.

Then use a paper cutter to cut the strip right down the middle.

Now you have two! Eat some chocolate, because you are SO CLEVER!!!

Put the end of one strip into the jaws of your paper crimper, gently squeeze then "chook" the whole strip through the crimper.

Oooooh...purty!!!

Put adhesive around the outside edge of the back of your piece of cardstock.

It needs to be RIGHT UP to the edge, so don't skimp!

Now start adhering the crimped scalloped strip. I make sure to trim the end so you are starting with a complete scallop. Use the crimps to gently bend the strip, bunching up the crimps on the side being adhered to help it curve around the punched shape. That is why you crimp...trying to do this without crimping is a recipe for ending up at the bar drinking Fuzzy Navels and trying to forget instead of staying safely in your craft room eating chocolate!

Keep going! Just think of the chocolate you can eat when you get done...that's what I do when I'm doing something a bit fiddly like this!

The hard part is the ends of the oval, because you have to make sure that the strip goes smoothly around them...make sure to bunch those crimps up!

At some point, I find it's easer to work from the front...I can see what I'm doing better.

Get the strip all the way around, matching the first scallop and the one that will overlap behind. Trim off the excess. Use a glue dot to stick the last scallop to the back of the first one.

Now stick another punched shape to the back of the ruffled shape. It looks nice and helps keep the ruffles in place.

Pinch the edges of the punched shapes together so that it flattens the ruffles and mushes them into the adhesive.

Cool, eh?

And the really cool thing is that it is double sided! So if you decide you like the other side of your patterned paper better you are all set! Eat chocolate, be merry!

And the cool thing is, you can do this with any shape you want to and get a cool, ruffly scalloped edge. I rock!!! (YILM!)

Hidden Message Card Tutorial

Did you think this day was EVER GOING TO COME?!?!?!?

Well, me neither. I have been SNOWED UNDER by all kinds of loose ends from Christmas, children's needs, husband's needs, household needs, NEEDS, NEEDS, NEEDS!!! What about ME?!?!? LOL!

Actually, I was also kidnapped by the urge to knit and knit some more. My knitting urge comes and goes and for the past two years, it was mostly gone, but finally kicked in before Christmas and I've been knitting steadily ever since. It's been cool.

But the other thing that I have been dealing with was a humongous case of Swapitis complicated by Mojo-a-GoGo. I had two swaps I signed up for, both using the same new set from the Spring/Summer 2009 Idea Book and Catalog called "Petal Pizzazz". And, as so often happens, once I chose a set to swap with and received the set, I found I couldn't think of a blessed thing to do with it1 Why? Why does this happen almost every stinkin' time?!?!?!?

Sigh...so I, of course, being the procrastinator that I am, decided to leave it until inspiration struck or until the last minute, whatever came first. Guess what came first?

Finally, I got down to work this week and made the one due first and got it out of the way, then made the second one and mailed it out yesterday. Phew!

So today I went to clean the stamp room and take the photographs for this tutorial. And I have a nice clean stamp room and now maybe you all will get off my back and leave me in peace be really happy! So here it is:

The Hidden Message Card Tutorial

You need:

Cardstock

• 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" Real Red
• 1 7/8" x 5 1/4" Bashful Blue
• 1 5/8" x 5" Kiwi Kiss (2)
• 1 5/8" x 5" Whisper White
• 1 1/8" x 1 7/8" Whisper White (3)
• 1 1/8" x 1 7/8" Kiwi Kiss (2)
• 1 1/8" x 1 7/8" Pumpkin Pie (2)
• 1 1/8" x 1 7/8" Bashful Blue (1)

Patterned Paper

• 2 1/8" x 5 1/2" Summer Picnic (2)

Inks

• Bashful Blue

Other

• Paper scorer
• Paper trimmer
• Photo Corner Punch
• My Way Punch

• Chocolate; that is, if you are not staring with dismay at the scale and wondering how you managed to gain THAT much weight over the holidays. You will notice a conspicuous ABSENCE of chocolate in these photographs, but I will leave you to draw your own conclusions about that, i.e. either it was the former possibility or that I have no more chocolate left or BOTH. You decide.

Now, I'm not going to do every step for you, just the tricky bits. Watch carefully:

Take the Real Red piece of cardstock and score in the following places from the short edge:

• 2 1/8"
• 4 1/4"
• 6 3/8"

If you are using the Score Pal, you can use the marks that are there for gatefold cards, plus the 4 1/4" mark in the middle.

Now take your paper trimmer. Your are going to cut the following slits from the 2 1/8" score line, crossing the 4 1/4" scoreline and ending at the 6 3/8" scoreline:

• 1 3/8"
• 2 3/4"
• 4 1/8"

It looks like this:

Now you need the two pieces of patterned paper.

Start on the left side of the center portion with all of the slits you cut. You are going to weave the paper, starting by going OVER the top left rectangle, then under, then over and then under again.

Slide it all the way to the left, then take the other piece of patterned paper:

Now weave starting UNDER the top rectangle, just like you used to make those paper mats when you were in kindergarten. Remember those? When you are done, it will look like this:

Now it's time to fold on the score lines:

Do a mountain fold on the center score line.

Search for your bone folder, cursing softly as it seems to have disappeared. It probably went where the chocolate went.

Now fold the left and right score lines as VALLEY folds.

Ah, there's that pesky bone folder!

Too bad there wasn't any chocolate where I found the bone folder. Fold the other side the same way.

Now you've got a W shape, see?

If you turn it over, it's an "M".

This is the back. If you do this right, it will continue to look just like this. The back doesn't get decorated.

Now, you're going to turn it back over and open the center up to reveal what will become the front of the card:

Pinch the two points of the W  together. Now it looks like a T that fell over on its head...maybe from eating too much chocolate.

When you do this, you'll see the center starting to separate. But it still will be sticking together, at least the first time.

Now put your fingers in the gap between the center bits and pry the two layers apart.

This is the front of the card! It's now a K lying on it's back, maybe because it hasn't had ENOUGH chocolate. One can never tell, because cardstock doesn't talk. If it does, then maybe you've had too much chocolate yourself.

Decorate this part as shown here:

When you want to switch back to the inside of the card, pull gently on the two back pieces of the K and reveal the inside, which you will decorate like this:

It's one of those things that you will not get until you try it. Really. I promise it will work. Just try it...eat some chocolate first though.

Well, I gotta go get in line to pick up children. Enjoy trying this card...you might want to start on a piece of old, crappy cardstock first, just to see if you can do it (I know you can, but you might not be feeling confident. Chocolate helps with that.) Ta!
