Something happens when you have a child move out, especially the first one. Your card-making instinct just kicks in, and you decide to send cards them them just because. Because you can make something really beautiful, and because getting something in the mail besides a bill is always a thrill. Though maybe not as thrilling as a check, but hey, I am able to transfer money into her account from mine, so I don't have to mess around with checks. So a card it should be.
It's also not really necessary to mail it, either, since we have already been down once this week after moving Laurel into her dorm to drop off her debit card for her account, a few things she forgot, and some groceries. And we are going back down this weekend to install the drafting table that a friend of ours is lending to her and also to take her shopping for art supplies at Blick. So it's not like we have really had the opportunity to miss Laurel as much as we might if she had chosen a college that was farther away. But still. This is my BABY who moved out of my house, and I miss her like crazy and want her to know I am thinking of her, even though we have been texting/IMing/Skyping, etc, all week long. But again, getting stuff in the mail addressed to you that doesn't have a bill, a plea for money, or an offer for just one more credit card because you have been PREAPPROVED is really special. Which is why we do this, after all. Right? I'm not great at sending cards out, don't get me wrong, as the boxes of cards I have made that line the shelves down here attest. But I mean to be better. Truly. So I started with my own child. Because she is cardworthy. Unlike a lot of other people who happen to be related to me...ahem..but I digress. I waited to post this until I was pretty sure she had gotten it. But if not, CHECK YOUR MAILBOX sweetie! Lookie:

GOJUS!!! (YILM) Yes, it's over the top. But it needed to be. This bird paper from Modern Medley was perfect because Laurel has always reminded me of a little bird, bright and chirpy with bright eyes, cocking her head to one side whenever I took her picture when she was little. Sigh...sniff...aw, geez...I miss my bird. I've always called her "Bird" too as a nickname. And now that she has flown out of the nest, I wanted to encourage her to fly high, which is why the stamp from Word Play (retired but still available as an MDS download) was such a natural thing to choose for this card.
I also stamped on the envelope to go with it, a nice Crumb Cake envelope, but I didn't take a picture of it.
You can buy this set and all the materials I used to make this card in my webstore.
Well, I have to get ready to do my usual Saturday schtick, but you go hug your kids and make a card for one of them. Ta!
